North Molton Village

North Molton sits on the south-western edge of Exmoor National Park, about 3 miles from the market town of South Molton and the A361 link road. Set in glorious countryside, the village and outlying hamlets and farms are currently home to around thirteen hundred residents. It is a happy, thriving community with a primary school, two churches, two pubs, a garage, a hairdressers and a variety of home-based businesses. There are two well-supported village halls and a sports club boasting football and cricket pitches and an indoor sports hall and pavilion.

The spirit of the community is captured in the book North Molton a celebration of the people and history of North Molton published by the North Molton History Society. The village was originally founded on the very successful wool trade, followed by a brief spell as a mining village. As the local saying goes "When North Molton was a thriving town South Molton was still a fuzzy down".

How to use the defibrillator.

A defibrillator (AED = Automated External Defibrillator) will talk you through how to use it - so do not worry about getting things wrong - the machine will be in control.

However, if you would like to be mentally prepared beforehand, please watch the St John's Ambulance video here, and the HeartSine video here (the defibrillator at The Politmore Arms is this model). The defibrillator should have a Resus pack containing a resuscitation mask, scissors for removing clothing, and a razor for shaving a patch on a hairy chest (the pads may not stick otherwise). Please note that these videos are examples of how to use a defibrillator and are not being promoted here as an effective way to learn CPR.

Amendments to East Street closure for bridge repairs

We have received the following update regarding the bridge repairs and road closure in North Molton. While the bridge will be closed for part of the day, main commuting times and overnight it will be reopened.

Dan Woollacott Fencing, on behalf of Devon County Council, will be carrying out repairs to the posts, rails and meshing on the bridge on East Street, North Molton, between Friday 9th – Wednesday 21st January 2026; our working hours will be between 09.00 – 15.30, the road will be open outside of these times.

Please see attached TTRO, the extension was required following in-house discussion regarding access for school transport during drop off and collection times, and for commuters. The works will take longer but hopefully the disruption at peak times will be lessened.

I understand some local residents have received a letter regarding the closure from the Traffic Management team, unfortunately that letter has the previous timings on it (09.00 – 17.00) so may raise alarm. Dan will definitely be working to restricted hours.

Ongoing A361 work /Borners Bridge

Please see an explanation from Griffiths of the ongoing work on the A361.

As you are aware the North Devon Link Road widening scheme was substantially completed in December 2024. Since this milestone, the road users have benefited from an improved journey experience. We are currently completing the outstanding works scope which includes snagging. The scheme includes upgrading the existing highway drainage network into which the improvement scheme connects. Also, we have a number of minor works to complete and will endeavour to close these out with minimal disruption.

The works at Borners Roundabout is planned to be completed by the Christmas holiday break but this is subject to weather conditions. These works will continue to operate under temporary traffic lights at night to avoid disruption to the road users. During the Christmas / New Year period there are no planned works on the highway.

We will return in January to complete others area along A361, working at night under temporary traffic signals, with a planned completion date of March 2026. Works to maintain the planted landscaped areas will continue for several years until all plants are well established, but this will only involve occasional visits.

Closure of Bridge at Black Cock Inn, Molland Parish

Please be advised that the bridge across the river to the north of the Black Cock Inn, which lies in Molland Parish, is going to be closed from Tuesday 2nd December 2025 for major repairs.  The anticipated finish date is October 2026, but may be up to 18 months from the start of work.

While not in North Molton Parish, some residents may use this route to the A361 and the east. Please see the attached Traffic Notice for further information and alternative routes.

Community Speedwatch Group - volunteers wanted

The Parish Council has been approached by a number of parishioners in recent weeks expressing concern about the speed of traffic through the village and the inherent risk to members of the public that this creates. North Molton Parish Council needs to collect facts and figures to quantify how serious the problem might be within the village, and equally important, canvass the views of parishioners on whether the current 30mph legal limit is appropriate given the level of traffic the village experiences.

Community Speedwatch is a national initiative where proactive members of the local communities join, with the support and supervision of their local police, to record details of speeding vehicles using approved detection devices. North Molton Parish Council are looking for volunteers to give some of their time to form a local Community Speedwatch Group. Full training is given by the organisation and no prior experience is needed - just a willingness to help collect data that contributes to a better understanding of traffic safety in our local area.

Councillor Andy Radley is a acting as coordinator for the proposed group and will be happy to talk to anyone who would like to be involved in this fact-finding initiative. Indeed any views on traffic management within the village both for and against any restrictions on speed regulations are welcome.

Please contact the Parish Council via the Clerk (clerk@northmoltonparish.gov.uk or 07784 177666) to register your interest and agree to having your name, email and telephone number on a contact list.

Thanks in advance,

North Molton Parish Council

FREE CYBER SUPPORT PROVIDED BY UK POLICING FOR SOLE TRADERS / SME’s / CHARITIES / PUBLIC AUTHORITIES

If you are involved in running a small to medium sized business, a charity, a public sector body or a local community group, and you are concerned about the security of your computers, your IT systems, your website or you just worry about your social media account, please be aware of the South West’s Cyber Resilience Centre.

Home | Cyber Resilience Centre for the South West

The SW CRC is part of UK Policing’s TEAM CYBER UK and headed up by Steve Shepherd who was previously a Devon and Cornwall Police, Cyber Protect Officer. The SW CRC is a not-for-profit organisation, funded by the Home Office and regional policing. The SW CRC exists to help South-West based small to medium sized businesses, organisations, charities, voluntary groups, and public sector bodies, with their Cyber Security. Cyber Security can feel complicated, expensive, and unmanageable. It can be hard to know where to start, or how to improve resilience.  Professional Cyber Security support is often costly and for many, obtaining such assistance can be well beyond their financial means.  These regional CRC’s have been set up by Government to help those who find themselves in just that position. Much of what is on offer from the CRC is free.

Should you wish to sign up you can do so here - Join Us | Cyber Resilience Centre for the South West

Alternatively, you can contact Steve Shepherd direct at -  steve.shepherd@swcrc.police.uk

Speed limits through North Molton

The Parish Council is considering application for 20 mph through the village, but any changes will depend upon several variables that are considered at County level: degree of local support, evidence of speeding, evidence of accidents, vulnerable road/footpath users, and level of local deprivation.

Previous speed-checks have found no significant speeding issues, although anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise. In order to go forwards, two key elements need to be addressed - the first is local support, and Sarah Springett Spurr has created a petition at https://chng.it/ZVBLgvLr6J

The second is the amount of speeding, and to address this there most likely needs to be a local Community Speedwatch Group - volunteers needed.

There will  be a public session on Speed Limits in the village at the September meeting (Weds 10th 7:30pm The Victory Hall) - you are encouraged to attend. Numbers will also be used to show support for any initiatives.

Laurels Playground

North Molton Playground

Sited in the play area of the Old School which closed in 1992, the Laurels Playground provides a safe enclosed area for children. The Parish Council began renovation in 2020, and so far equipment installed includes a ride-on tractor, 3-way see-saw, a slide with rope ladder, a new swing with an accessible basket, and an in-ground trampoline that can hold up to 5 children and is accessible to wheelchair users.

Coloured hopscotch graphics and a large mural designed by local children brighten up the area.

Work is ongoing to repair the rear wall and old iron railings, a lovely feature of the playground. Many kind donations from individuals have been made towards the renovation, and residents have given their time and energy in helping with the restoration. Support has also come from fundraising events, The National Lottery, Griffiths, the Freemasons, North Devon Atlantic Scramble Club, and the local government development levy grant (S106).

North Molton Book Box

A few years ago, North Molton Parish Council purchased the redundant telephone box in the village square from BT for the princely sum of £1.00. After a few repairs, and thanks to Cllr Anne Johnson being able to locate replacement perspex panels, we were able to turn it into the phone box library in 2021. Our library is available to all, residents and visitors alike.

The premise is simple. Books for all ages are welcome, and anyone can take or donate books (we check for suitably and cleanliness on a regular basis). When we have a surplus, and to keep them refreshed, we either store excess books or donate them to one of the charity shops in South Molton.

If you would like further information or have questions, please contact Councillor Hugh Jennings.

Dog Fouling

North Devon Council wishes to remind anyone in charge of a dog that it is an offence to allow your dog to foul in a publicly accessible area without cleaning it up. This includes in car parks, recreation and sports grounds, parks, pavements as well as verges, footpaths and beaches. Failure to do so or leaving it to collect later (or even hanging it on a tree) can still result in a fixed penalty of £75 (or a maximum of £1000). Report dog fouling incidents using the NDC online form.
